Down by the Seaside (Infrared Image)

March 18, 2010

I had an opportunity to shoot some infrared last week, something I haven’t done in a while. Something else I haven’t done in a while: tint an infrared image. I think the cool blue tones give a pretty specific emotional feel to the image, it’s that psychology of color thing going on. I think that when I processed this shot the soothing tone was mainly for my own benefit. I’ve been working my rear end off keeping up with editing for the paying jobs and when I took time to edit some personal work it was a therapeutic exercise more than anything.

I am so jealous. I want to shoot infrared … Love the look of “white foam” on the branches … very “artsy”, Jim!! {:o)

The “white foam” isn’t anything special that I did to the image. It’s simply the nature of infrared – healthy green vegetation renders as bright tonal values because of it’s infrared reflectivity. The clusters of pine needles lack precise definition at the high ISO required to shoot this without a tripod and they literally glow at infrared wavelengths. The result of that combination is the foamy look that you see.
