Desert Landscape Before Dawn

October 7, 2010

We hiked through the high desert terrain of northwestern New Mexico as the pre-dawn light began to brighten the sky. Our goal was to reach the fantastic rock formations of the Bisti Badlands before sunrise and stake out some compositions that would look good in the first rays of the sun. It turned out that things also looked terrific in that sweet, soft light that poured from the sky ahead of the sun’s arrival. I made several landscape images before dawn in this amazing place. This is the first exposure I made during the hike as a test shot. We were about halfway to our first targeted set of rock formations at this point. More and better images from this location to follow.

Beautiful pre-dawn light! The ground looks as if it has a dusting of snow.
